Facts

A short commuting distance from Hobart, the Brighton area has grown considerably in recent years. Governor Lachlan Macquarie selected Brighton likely to be the future capital of Tasmania. Largely centered in a farming district it gained considerable recobgition for having an army barracks established at the time if the First World War with continuous military occupation until the 1990s. The improvement of the main Midlands Highway has seen the population grow from 2,000 in 1950 to about 14,000 today.
